Service for riders

Controls

Uppsala – Trondheim – Uppsala has in 2026 both manned and unmanned controls. The controls are spaced suitable for a 300 km/day tempo, but also other schedules. See the route page for details about our controls. Preliminary route will be available with ordinary registration.

Accommodation

We offer accommodation in large halls with air mattress and blanket on a first come first serve basis at all manned controls. This is included in the registration fee. Several controls provide showers. If you prefer higher standard accomodation, there are also hostels and hotels / mountain lodges at several locations.

On the page for each control there will be information on the number of free beds.

Coffe and basic food

At the manned controls we offer coffee, tea, snacks and other basic food at all times the control is manned. We also offer basic hot food during lunchtime and evenings. Vegetarian and vegan food is available. Food is also included in the registration fee.

Dropbag

At the start you may hand in one or two drop bags. Bags for this is included. See rules and schedule on the dropbag page. It's also possible, in addition to the drop bag service, to leave luggage at the start for storage during the ride. It can then later be picked up at the finish in Gamla Uppsala.

Map, cue sheet and tracking

Riders will receive a cue sheet, map and number tag for their bike at the start. A GPX-file will be provided on this site. Online tracking of the riders will be available. The route is however generally not sign posted. Please note that the route may be updated, for example because of road works.

This page will provide rider tracking when the ride is started.

Start groups

Our ambition is providing several start groups, to cater for different preferences as well as manage load at our manned controls. You can select a start group when ordinary registration opens. You can switch start groups if there are slots available.

Unsure about which start group to choose? When the ride starts we will provide an online schedule calculator.

During the ride

Route

There are hills up gradients of up to 10% along the way, though most hills are less steep. Total elevation gain is around 18000m. The road surface is asphalt in the vast majority of cases, mostly on small roads with little traffic. There are a few stretches on good quality bike paths. See the route page. Preliminary route will be available with ordinary registration. Participants have to follow the official route - see the rules page.

Proof of passage

On the manned controls you stamp in the reception. We also ask that you notice the reception staff when leaving, to enable them to register that cyclists are on the road to the next control. At unmanned controls you can stamp at cafes, shops or in our official web app. See the rules page for details.

Time limits

The time limit for Uppsala – Trondheim – Uppsala is 131 hours. This means you will have to be back in Uppsala by 18 on Friday at the latest if starting 07:00 on Sunday. Later start groups have correspondingly later latest arrival time.

If you ride very fast in the ealiest of start groups, you may at a few controls (Røros and later) arrive at a manned control that is not yet open. In such case you can stamp as if the control was unmanned. Very fast riders are recommended choosing a later start group.

If you have to abandon

Contact ride staff if you have to abandon. Phone numbers are on the brevet card and on the page for each control. You can also report DNS from the web app. If you abandon, you are responsible for getting back. Public transit is available on many parts of the route, but departure frequency varies highly.

Accompanying non-riders

See the rules page for regulations of support during the ride. If you have family or friends accompanying you to Uppsala - Trondheim - Uppsala, we can warmly recommend signing up as volunteer. It is also possible to work only part of the time that the control is open.

Travel to Uppsala

See the travel information page for tips on how you can travel to the start. With some train connections you can bring your bike as-is, without a transport case.

Good to know

Weather

Uppsala - Trondheim - Uppsala passes through various types of nature and up to 900 meters elevation over the mountains. The temperature is often around 15-30 °C during the day, but it can chill down rapidly in the evening. Temperatures down to 0 °C are possible. Weather reports for Sweden and Norway can be found on YR from Norway's meteorological institute.

Flora and fauna

There can be reindeer on the road in the mountains and in Norway, there might be sheep. In northern Scandinavia there are also wild boar, elk, bears, and wolves. As a rule, they are very timid and stay away from people. There can be a problem with mosquitoes in Gysinge, particularly in the evening. They are not dangerous unless you are allergic, but they are definitely not afraid of people.

In Sweden and Norway we have right of public access. That means it is permissible to hike and set up a tent out in the open, as long as you do not disturb people, animals or cause any damage. You are also allowed to pick fruit and berries that grow in the wild.

Telephone and electricity

There might not be cell phone coverage in some of the more remote areas.

Both Sweden and Norway use the continental European standard for electrical sockets. It will be possible to charge batteries at the controls, but with a limited number of wall sockets. Bring your own charging equipment.

Shops and money

Uppsala to Mora and Støren-Trondheim pass through relatively populated areas. North of Mora there are longer stretches with only isolated communities. From Särna to Tännäs (100 km) there are no shops, restaurants or public transportation.

Grocery stores in towns in Sweden are usually open in the evenings, both on weekdays and weekends. In the countryside and in Norway, shops are often closed on Sundays. Check the cue sheet for tips about finding food. Popular cards like Visa and Mastercard work fine in both Sweden and Norway. A few very small cafés accept only cash.

Recommendations

In order to participate in UTU successfully you will need to cycle 300 km serveral days in a row. A 300 km brevet or equivalent qualifies you, but we recommend that you ride several brevets during the spring and preferably a 600 km brevet.

Bike

Any exclusively human-powered bike may be used. We recommend that you use a bike you have already used for long distances. Ensure that tyres and brake/gear cables are fresh, but also not completely new at the start.

Mudguards (fenders) are not obligatory but are good for you and others in case of rain.

Tempo bars and bar ends are allowed without specific limits, as long as tube ends are plugged and the bike can be safely operated.

Recumbents and velomobiles are allowed. If the seat blocks the view of a reflective vest, extra rear-facing reflectors are recommended. We also recommend a rear-view mirror.

Clothing and equipment

Bring warm clothes and functional rain gear.

We also recommend a waterproof pocket for your brevet card, a pump and tools for basic repairs. This includes a spare tube and if possible a spare tyre, spokes of suitable length and perhaps a spare derailleur hanger. If you use electronic shifting, please bring your charger.
